A Lane Going Up the Hill
It was a heavy rainstorm in Kampung Sepang. Jabri and Hail had just finished their dinner together at Jabri's house. They were sitting in the living room for coffee and conversation, hoping the rain would stop soon.
It was half past eleven at night and the downpour was showing no sign of stoping.
"Looks like you'll have to spend the night here, Halil," said Jabri.
"No way," He said, "I've to be at work early tomorrow morning."
A few moment later Halil go into the car, started the engine and said good night to Jabri.
Something told him that he shouldn't have turned off the lane going up the hill, but it was the shortest way home. He knew that lane. It ran across from and old Chinese cemetery. There were no lights, no cars, no people just Halil and his old car.
All of sudden a white shape appeared in the middle of the lane. Halil shone his beam of light in that direction. The white shape turned to Halil. He saw a pair of crimson eyes staring at him. It was a long-haired woman in axlong white dress. She grinned at Halil. At once, Halil felt his blood freeze. His heartbeat stopped. His mouth opened but he was speechless. His eyes opened wide in terror.
Suddenly, consciousness came into his mind. He quickly reversed his car and speed away just in time.
"I think I'll take up your offer to spend the night here after all," Hall told Jabri as his legs trembled.
Bandung Bondowoso and Roro Jonggrang
Once, there was a beautiful Javanese princess whose name was Roro Jonggrang. Roro Jonggrang whose beauty was very famous in the land was the daughter of Prabu Baka, an evil king.
One day, a handsome young man with super natural power, named Bandung Bondowoso, defeated and killed Prabu Baka. On seeing Princess Roro jonggrang's beauty, bandung Bondowoso fell in love and wanted to marry her.
Meanwhile, Princess Roro Jonggrang felt sad due to the death of her father. She did not want to marry Bandung because he had killed her father. But she was also afraid of Bandung. So to refuse politely, she made a condition. "I will marry you but you have to build one thousand temples in one night as a wedding gift." requested Roro Jonggrang.. Bandung agreed with this condition.
Helped by the spirits of demons, Bandung Bondowoso started building the temples. Approaching midnight, the work was nearly done. Roro Jonggrang knew and thought, "What should I do? Bandung is smarter than me. I will lose against Bandung."
Suddenly she got an idea. She woke up all the women in the place and ordered them to make the noisy sounds of grinding rice so that the roosters would think it had already dawn.
Bandung Bondowoso heard the noise and got frustrated because he failed to complete the thousandth temple. "The princess has deceived me!" Following his anger, he cursed Roro Jonggrang, "You have cheated me. Now, the thousandth temple is you!"
At once, the princess turned into a statue.
Knowing this, Bandung Bondowoso regretted this and he went away into a far land. From then, people called the temple Prambanan Temple and the princess statue, Roro Jonggrang, Roro Jonggrang statue.
Batara Kala
Well, my friends, I have a very interesting story. The story is about 'Batara Kala', a myth from Java. Have you heard about it? No? Never? Please be quiet and listen carefully.
You know, Batara Kala was an evil giant. He always killed people. especially children. His hair was made from fire. Everybody was frightened of him.One day, Batara Guru, the chief god invited all the gods and goddesses to drink sacred water in Paradise. The water was called Tirta Amertasari. It means "The Water of Immortality". You know why? Because anyone who drinks this water, he or she will live forever. He or she will never die.
You know what? Batara Kala was not invited because he was evil. Then, secretly, he flew into Paradise and stole some of the water. Batara Surya, the god of Sun and Batari Chandra, the goddess of Moon knew what he did. Immediately both of them reported to Batara Vishnu, the keeper god of the universe.
Then Batara Vishnu took his fatal weapon, Cakra and shot it at Batara Kala.While Batara Kala was drinking the water, the Cakra hit him on the neck. Batara Kala's body was separated from the head at once. But, since he had drunk the sacred water, his head was alive. He was very furious wit Batara Surya and Batari Chandra and swore to take revenge on them.
He chased Batara Surya and Batari Chandra, caught them both ands wallowed them up.
Fortunately, Batara Surya and Batari Chandra could escape from Batara Kala's throat because he no longer had a body. So, Batari Chandra and Batara Surya were safe everytime Batara Kala swallowed them up.
That's why when there is a solar eclipse or lunar eclipse, Javanese people believe that Batara Kala is swallowing Batara Surya or Batari Chandra. It's interesting, isn't it?
Beauty and the Beast
Once upon a time there was a prince. He was good looking and very rich. He lived in a beautiful castle together with his staffs and servants.One rainy dark night, a woman came to his castle. She was old and ugly. The prince didn't like her and sent her away. After he sent the woman away, she turned into a beautiful fairy. She cast a spell over the prince and his castle. The prince became a beast. He was no longer good looking. He looked very ugly instead and all his servants turned into furniture.
One day, an old man named Maurice was traveling past the castle. It was raining so hard that he decided to enter the castle. When the Beast saw him, he captured him.After some time, Maurice's daughter, Belle, began to worry about him.
He started to look for him. Finally, she arrived in the castle and she found her father there. She asked the Beast to let her father go but he refused. Belle, then, agreed to stay in the castle so that her father could go home.
While Belle was staying at the castle, the Beast slowly changed. He was no mean anymore. Belle began to like him and finally they fell in love with each other.
Right after she declared her love for him the spell was broken. The Beast and his servants became human again. Then, the Beast and Belle got married. They lived happily ever after.
Donald's New Hat
One day, Daisy decided to buy Donald a new hat. "Your hat is so old- fashioned!" she said. "Come on, I'll buy you a new one."Donald knew that Daisy was right, so he agreed to go to a hat shop. As they went in, Daisy took off his old hat. "Hey, what's going on?" asked Donald.
"I'm taking off your old hat because it's so ugly. We don't want the
assistant to see you wearing it, do we?" said Daisy. Donald just said,
"Er.......no, .......
I mean, you're right, we don't."
In fact, Donald was very fond of this old hat, although he didn't mind getting a new one if Daisy paid for it. The trouble was this: There wasn't any hat in the shop that Donald liked. He tried many hats, but he felt that all hats looked silly on him.The shop assistant was getting tired of serving Donald, but they took another hat and showed it to him. "What about this one, Sir? I'm sure you'll like it."
"I quite agree!" said Donald happily. Do you know why? Because that
hat looked exactly the same as his old one! Poor Daisy, she wasn't very
happy, but she had to pay for that hat. She promised she would buy a new hat for Donald, didn’t she?
